The Origins of Zlatan

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was born in Malmo, Sweden, on October 3, 1981 the son of a Croatian mother and Bosnian father. He grew up in Rosengard, an area of town heavily populated by immigrants from Yougoslavia. Between the ages of 10 to 13 Zlatan played for a team named “FBK BALKAN”, a Rosengard club, founded in 1962. A club which has always had a strong emphasis on its youth academy. Thanks to the FIFA rules every time Zlatan is sold to a new professional Club they receive a commission, which is due to the club who trained a professional player from when he was 12 years old.

This is the story of FBK BALKAN. The club is currently led by five young managers, one of whom – Ivan Milosevic – played with Zlatan in the early ’90s. While the old members of the club are still active and involved in the day to day management, the new leadership has brought a renewed commitment to promote football amongst local kids. They are working towards expanding the number of youth teams from 5 to 10 and obviously. waiting for the next Zlatan!
